I’m in the midst of editing a wedding that included such moving vows that I was tearing up as I filmed! I’ve been in the Arizona wedding video business for almost 10 years and MOST of my couples do a great job of writing their vows, but sometimes it can be hard to know where to start! Here are some tips for writing vows that really signal how important the moment is:
1) Make room in your schedule to really think about what you want to tell your partner. Take time and give it a few reads. Don’t be afraid to edit.
2) Start by telling your spouse what you love about them.
3) Share briefly about how you knew you wanted to be with them for life.
4) Say the thing. Don’t be afraid to wax poetic or to say something vulnerable from the heart. The person across from you is committing to a lifetime with you, now is the time to dig deep!
5) Finish with vows or promises. It’s fun to add a little quip about your quirky relationship but don’t forget to add some more serious promises too. What do you want this step to mean for you and your spouse? Tell them!
Then PRACTICE. It might seem silly and you definitely don’t need to memorize, but consider reading them out loud once or twice and make sure you’re comfortable with the way the words flow.
When it comes time for your big day have fun and joke around with your buds, but plan to take a minute to yourself before it’s time for the vows. It always helps to recenter and get into the right spirit. If you’re doing personal vows use that time as your standing, waiting to turn for your special someone to take that breath and get ready. If vows are happening during the ceremony that focus time can happen as the wedding party walks the aisle.
No matter what—breathe and take it in, this is your wedding day and these vows are ultimately for your partner. And the good news is, they already said YES!
I really loved the “promises” portion of Tyler’s vows because he did not shy away from making strong commitments and you can tell he really put a lot of thought into what he wanted for his relationship with Shawnee. Check out the clip below to hear a portion of his amazing vows.
I also have to make sure you know that Shawnee is the most wonderful, kind, caring, thoughtful person. Knowing that makes hearing his vows even more special!
